Shenley Village Cricket Club News story

Mick Hillen

05 Feb 2018

I have received the sad news that our 2nd XI scorer Mick Hillen passed away after a very short illness. His funeral was held in November and I understand it was a small but nice service at West Herts Crematorium in Garston where his ashes are now scattered.

Mick has been part of our club for about 15 years when he was introduced to us by former player and Shenley legend Steve Scott. Mick started by doing a bit of umpiring and scoring but gradually became involved on a more regular basis. In recent years he has been the 2nd XI scorer and reserve umpire and was extremely efficient in both jobs. He loved his cricket and if he wasn't officiating he would come down and support the team. He was a regular attendee of the Cricket Dinner and Race Nights and a big supporter of the club in general. He lived for his Saturdays in the summer and in the week he would study all our teams results and league positions. He knew all the 2nd XI players batting and bowling averages and was always keen to pass on his thoughts and observations from his position in the scorebox.

I spent a lot of time with Mick in my car, in the scorebox and in the clubhouse. He lived alone and was a very private man but SVCC was a very big part of his life. He also enjoyed watching Borehamwood FC and having a flutter on the horses at his local Ladbrokes.  He had a great knowledge and passion for cricket and was an interesting character. I'll miss him greatly. RIP Mick
