Shenley Village C C Second XI v Waltham Cross Rosedale II on Sat 07 May 2005 at 13:30
Shenley Village C C Won 6 wickets
MoM Bubs Willingham
It was a peculiar game to be involved in with both teams producing some outstanding and awful cricket.
Captain Scott won the toss and elected to field. Wood and Davenall bowled well early on as the SVCC bowlers kept a tight reign on the batting attack and at 64 for 1 it looked as though it might get away from Shenley after some indifferent bowling but this soon changed and wickets began to fall. Bubs Willingham’s' excellent spell of 15 overs of spin with three wickets and at the other end from Steve Scott's outswing 4 for 27 in twelve overs took control and this backed up by good fielding restricted precious runs from being scored.
Although Waltham Cross were not at full strength they had match winners and both Scott and Bubs Willingham did enough to tempt them into mistakes and as the overs and wickets dwindled Watham Cross were all out for 132 in the 52nd over much to the relief of Scott.
In reply both Shenley Village batsmen Bubs Willingham and Chris Stanley found the boundaries and ate into the total before Willingham gifted a catch close in with the score on 34. Stanley continued to crack away as Laurie Willingham playing cautiously until he was out flatfooted given out LBW for 10, and with Stanley caught spectacularly at square leg, just before for 29 runs. Stuart Gymer played himself in and looked to finish the game off but was brilliantly caught at silly point after connecting with a vicious drive for 18.
This left Lloyd Willingham (27 not out) and Ross Thurston (17 not out) to finish off the game and this they duly did with some lofty blows as the field came in by the 30th over.
The first win of the season from an overall good team performance will have other teams in the division looking. Hopefully, things will continue and see the Village side in the promotional push this season after underperforming for a couple of seasons.
SVCC II: Bubs Willingham, Chris Stanley, Laurie Willingham, Stuart Gymer, Lloyd Willingham (Wkt), Ross Thurston, Steve Scott, Dave Stubbs, Ed Lillywhite, James Davenall, Kevin Wood.
