U14 COUNTY CHAMPIONS
18 Jul 2023
After beating Letchworth by 7 wickets in the semi final. Shenley were to face the side that they lost to in the u13 final, Wheathampstead.
Shenley won the toss and elected to bat on what was a very good cricket wicket and a quick outfield.
Shenley got off to a very fast start with Jonah Elliot and Ali Navqi regularly hitting the boundary and running hard to make the 1s into 2s. Shenley raced to 83/0 off 9. Jonah Elliot retired out for a well made 41.
Wheathampstead bowlers then came back into the game and bowled some excellent tight overs which saw Ali Navqi bowled for 31. Nukel Trivedi(15)and Matthew Fretter(29) continued to move the board along both falling selflessly in the closing overs trying to raise the run rate. Shenley finally reaching 151/4 off their 20 overs.
This was around a par score and Shenley would have to bowl well to restrict a good Wheathampstead batting line up.
The first over from Sachin Chandra was a maiden. Then the Wheathampstead batsmen found regular boundaries. There was 1 wicket to fall to Ali Navqi removing the Wheathampstead openers middle stump with a fantastic deleivery.
Wheathampstead reaching 71/1 off their first 10 overs. The game was finely balanced. It could have gone either way.
Krish Deebak took the 2nd wicket which brought Wheathampstead strongest batsman to the crease. He hit a very brisk and eye catching 21 off 7 balls before he was brilliantly caught off the bowling of Matthew Fretter by Nakul Trivedi. Easily the catch of the season. Running up the steep hill at Bishop Stortford in a swirling wind, pouched the catch running backwards over his shoulder. This left Wheathampstead needing 41 of 5 overs.
The return of Sachin Chandra saw him remove the middle stump of the Wheathampstead batsman and the very next ball claim another scalp well caught by Krish Deebak at backward point. This all but ended the game and Wheathampstead limped to 135 for 8 off their 20 overs.
It was a high quality, very competitive game by 2 of the leading sides at the u14 age group.
A special thanks goes to Bishop Stortford for their hospitality, the umpires who stood in all the games and the parents for their continued dedication in bringing the boys to the games.
