INTRODUCING THE SHENLEY SHARKS…
We will soon be fielding a new U19s T20 side – The Shenley Sharks - captained by Charlie Thurston. The team will compete in a newly-formed T20 league; part of a new initiative from the ECB. The aim is to encourage more teenagers to play cricket with friends from their own age group - with an emphasis on enjoying themselves. The hope is that this will ultimately increase the participation of younger players in senior cricket and will keep them within the game long term.
The T20 League fixtures will try to promote the social side of cricket and make playing a fun experience for all. To this end, the ECB would like to see all participating clubs providing music, entertainment, a BBQ and match prizes (such as for highest number of sixes hit, or a great catch by a spectator, etc, etc). Visiting teams will be asked to mark the opposition on their hospitality and efforts made to make the game enjoyable….and our club intends to rise to the challenge!
As a warm-up for the U19s T20 League debut (the first League fixture is away to St Albans on 11th August) we have arranged two inter-club friendly matches on the Nursery Ground at Shenley on Wednesday 5th August and Thursday 6th August – both 5.30pm start. Would all senior players interested in taking part in these matches please put their availabilties into the club website as soon as possible. The hope would be to field as strong a Shenley senior XI to take on the Sharks as is possible, to give them somethhing they can really get their teeth into!
Likewise, any U19s who are interested in the T20 side and who have not already been in touch with Charlie about this are encouraged to make contact with him asap. (If you do not have his contact details, please reply to this email and we will pass it to Charlie).
We hope as many of you as possible will support this new U19s initiative in whatever way you can – either playing, helping out with music or prizes or just coming along to spectate and to join in the fun atmosphere.
